2. Copata Genico
Choreographed and performed by: Sarah Evatt (chair), Eller Mallchok (chair), Sarah Douglas McCall, Emily Rice
Music: Sheila Chandra
Inspired by Alvin Ailey Dance Company's Takademe, sophomores Sarah Evatt, Eller Mallchok (chair), Sarah Douglas McCall, and Emily Rice took on the challenge of creating a piece which displayed their precise technique and sense of humor, leaving the audience laughing and wanting more. The complex, tightly woven rhythms of Indian and modern dance are deconstructed and abstracted through percussive, fast-paced syllables. When asked why they decided to create such a dance, chairs Evatt and Mallchok said they were looking for "comic relief" in the Terpsichord concert. "All the other dances always had intense themes and we thought there needed to be a breather for the audience, so we thought we could provide that. We weren't expecting however such a great reaction from the audience. They loved it more than we thought they would. That was the most rewarding part." Their focus and witty choreography exemplify how talented and creative these four young girls truly are; they are sure to hold promise in their next two years of Terpsichord.

A dark empty stage lit by a single light, the sweet sultry voice of Sinatra hangs in the air. A dancer slithers through the dark as the Serpent from the Garden of Eden with a delicious red apple in her hand. Temptation. The Forbidden Fruit. Here is the big question, though. Would you take a bite? Roxie certainly did. "Forbidden Fruit" is centered on sultry movement with jazz and twists of modern dance. Senior Carol Mabry found inspiration from her music choice as well as David Parsons' choreography in "Envelope." The dance is centered on temptation, one's agency and curiosity of "the forbidden fruit," and the consequences that coincide with eating it. One audience member says, "My favorite part was when the dancer bit the apple and just dropped it on the stage while every watched her blindly exit. The end was definitely my favorite part...I thought the dance was really interesting thought-provoking." So what about you? Would you take a bite?
