Earth Day Tree Planting
April 22, 2003

The Audubon Society owns and manages Maclellan Island (in the center of the river across from the GPS soccer fields) as a wildlife refuge. Unfortunately, the island loses close to 8 feet a year due to erosion from boat wake action. For Earth Day, our focus was to plant trees which help reduce soil erosion from the island’s banks.
Volunteers from GPS and McCallie outdoor programs:
GPS—Terri Knepper, Todd Wells        McCallie—Keith Chapin
Hannah Johnson, 11                               Caleb Bowman, 11
Elana Gulas, 11                                      Lee Coan, 12
Leanne Camp, 6                                     Josh Smith, 10

TVA donated around 100 native trees which are suitable for their ability to help restore, stabilize, and enhance the island shoreline as well as improving plant diversity and wildlife habitat.
Trees planted:
Button bush     Bald cypress     River birch
Redbud     Silky dogwood
