SHAPE Curriculum

SHAPE is sequenced program of fitness and wellness required of grades six through eleven.  The letters in the word SHAPE stand for Starting Habits to Attain Physical Excellence.  The sixth grade program will emphasize development and refinement of locomotor, nonlocomotor, and manipulative skills.  Body management, rhythmics, cooperative games, personal hygiene, and healthy heart activities will also be included.  Seventh graders will participate in a fitness through sports curriculum that will include basic skills, fitness activities, and grade appropriate health lessons.  A “Walk Through the Heart” unit teaches seventh graders the importance of living smoke-free, making healthy food choices, and exercising regularly.  Introduction to SHAPE will be the emphasis for the eighth grade class.  The major components of physical fitness (cardiovascular fitness, body composition, flexibility, and muscular strength and endurance) will be introduced through games, fitness activities, and classroom instruction.  A quarter of tennis instruction and a unit on substance abuse is also a part of the eighth grade curriculum.  Ninth and tenth graders will follow a specified program outlined below.  Juniors will be required to participate in an independent course of study requiring an exercise commitment for a minimum of two hours a week.  An exercise log will be turned into the department head once a month for review and evaluation.
