SHAPE
is a sequenced program of fitness and wellness required of grades six through
eleven. The
letters in the word SHAPE stand for Starting Habits to Attain Physical
Excellence. The
girls are taught to set their individual goals based on their current fitness
level and unique capabilities for improvement.
Through testing, education, and participation in various activities, the
girls will have knowledge of the health enhancing components of fitness and will
be able to show mastery of this knowledge by exhibiting a physically active
lifestyle.
The
sixth grade program will emphasize development and refinement of locomotor,
nonlocomoter, and manipulative skills.
Body management, rhythmics, cooperative games, personal hygiene, and
healthy heart activities will also be included.
Seventh graders will participate in a fitness through sports curriculum,
which will include basic skills, fitness activities, and grade appropriate
health lessons.
Introduction to SHAPE will be the emphasis for the eighth grade class.
The major components of physical fitness (cardiovascular fitness, body
composition, flexibility, and muscular strength and endurance) will be
introduced through games, fitness activities, and classroom instruction.
A unit on substance abuse will also be included.
Interactive
behavior in sports and activities provides avenues through which the character
education traits are addressed and developed.
Those traits include courage, citizenship, honesty, fairness, respect for
others, kindness, cooperation, self-respect, self-control, courtesy, compassion,
tolerance, diligence, generosity, punctuality, cleanliness, school pride,
respect of the environment, patience, creativity, sportsmanship, loyalty, and
perseverance.
